Life Transitions Therapy in Toronto's Little Portugal

Even when the change is something we really wanted, it can knock us off balance.

Maybe it's a new job, a move, becoming a parent, a relationship ending, retirement, or a diagnosis, yours or someone else's, that's changed what your life looks like day to day. Transitions don't have to be bad to be destabilizing. Even changes you chose, and are genuinely glad about, can bring up grief for what's ending, uncertainty about what's next, and a strange sense of not quite recognizing your own life for a while.

This work is about getting steady footing again, and using the transition as a real opportunity rather than just something to get through.

Transitions we support people through

Career change
A new job, a layoff, a shift in direction, or work that no longer fits who you've become

Becoming a parent
The identity, relationship, and shifts that come with a new baby, at any stage of parenthood

Divorce or separation
Rebuilding a sense of self and stability outside a relationship that shaped your life

Grief and loss
The death of someone close to you, or grief for something less visible: a relationship, a version of your life, a future you expected

Retirement
The loss of structure and identity that often comes with stepping away from a career

Moving or immigration
Rebuilding community, routine, and a sense of belonging somewhere new

Health changes
Adjusting to a new diagnosis, recovery, or a body that works differently than it used to

How therapy actually helps

Transitions are disorienting because the ground you were standing on has actually shifted, not because you're handling it wrong. Therapy isn't about rushing you back to "normal," it's about helping you find your footing in whatever comes next.

We draw on a range of evidence-based approaches depending on what each person needs:

Green square with rounded corners and the word ACT in white capital letters in the center.

ACT (Acceptance & Commitment Therapy)
clarifying what actually matters to you now, especially when an old identity or role no longer fits

Green background with white text 'CBT' in the center.

CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy)
Working with the anxious or catastrophic thinking that often spikes during periods of change

Somatic work
Transitions register in the body as much as the mind, working with the nervous system directly through the instability

Text on green background reading 'Coaching informed therapy'

Coaching-informed therapy
Practical support for decision-making and rebuilding structure during a period of flux

Green rounded square with the word 'Mindfulness' in white text

Mindfulness
Building awareness of your inner experience without judgment.

No one-size-fits-all

We'll work with you to develop a roadmap that meets your needs and goals, whether that's easing self-criticism day to day, or doing deeper work on where your sense of worth got built in the first place.

You don't have to have it figured out yet.

Transitions respond well to support, not because therapy speeds up the timeline, but because it gives you somewhere steady to process what's changing while you're still in the middle of it.

You don't need a crisis to justify getting support through a transition. Change itself is enough of a reason.

Before you begin

"This is a good change, shouldn't I just be happy about it?"

Good changes can still bring loss, uncertainty, and disorientation. Both things can be true at once, and neither cancels the other out.

"I feel like I should have adjusted by now."

There's no fixed timeline for adjusting to a major life change. Struggling doesn't mean something's wrong with you.

The word 'Love' written in a stylized cursive font with a gold color.

"I don't know exactly what I need help with, just that things feel off.”

That's a completely reasonable place to start. A lot of transition work begins with figuring out what's actually going on before deciding what to do about it.
