Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) in Toronto
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) in Toronto
A lot of energy goes into trying not to feel anxious, not to think the critical thought, not to remember. And a lot of life gets put on hold until that project succeeds. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy offers a different deal: less time wrestling with what's in your head, more time moving toward what matters to you — with the anxious thoughts along for the ride if they insist.
We offer ACT in person on Dundas West and online across Ontario.
What is ACT?
ACT (said as the word "act") is an evidence-based therapy that builds psychological flexibility: the capacity to stay present with difficult thoughts and feelings while still choosing actions that reflect your values. Instead of arguing with every thought, you learn to notice it as a thought — and decide whether it gets to drive.
ACT isn't about resignation. "Acceptance" means making room for what's already here so you can stop spending your life fighting it.
Where it comes from
Psychologist Steven Hayes and colleagues developed ACT in the 1980s, grounded in research on how language and thinking shape our experience. It's part of a broader family of mindfulness- and values-based behavioural therapies and has a large, growing research base across anxiety, depression, chronic pain and more.
How ACT works
DBT teaches four sets of skills:
Acceptance — making room for uncomfortable feelings instead of fighting or avoiding them
Defusion — seeing thoughts as thoughts ("I'm having the thought that I'll fail") rather than facts
Present-moment awareness — coming back to what's actually happening now
Self-as-context — noticing there's a "you" that's bigger than any passing story about you
Values — getting clear on what you want your life to be about
Committed action — taking steps in that direction, even when it's uncomfortable
Sessions blend conversation, experiential exercises, metaphor and small real-world experiments.
What ACT can help with
Anxiety, worry and overthinking
Depression and low motivation
Burnout and loss of direction
Chronic pain and illness
Perfectionism and self-criticism
Life transitions and big decisions
ADHD-related avoidance and procrastination
Is ACT therapy right for me?
ACT may suit you if you've tried to think or reason your way out of anxiety and it keeps coming back, if you feel stuck waiting to feel ready, or if you want therapy that connects to how you actually spend your days.

Many people notice shifts within 8 to 16 sessions, though it depends on your goals.
