Mindfulness-Based Therapy in Toronto
Mindfulness-Based Therapy in Toronto
Mindfulness has been sold as a lot of things: a productivity hack, a lifestyle, a candle scent. Underneath the marketing is something more useful and more demanding — a trainable capacity to notice what's happening, inside and out, without immediately being swept along by it. In therapy, that capacity becomes a foundation for almost everything else.
We offer mindfulness-based therapy in person on Dundas West and online across Ontario.
What is mindfulness-based therapy?
Mindfulness-based therapy integrates attention and awareness practices into psychotherapy. You learn to observe thoughts, emotions and sensations with curiosity rather than judgment. That creates a small but crucial gap between what you feel and what you do next — and in that gap, choice becomes possible.
Where it comes from
Mindfulness practices have roots in contemplative traditions, particularly Buddhism. In 1979, Jon Kabat-Zinn introduced Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) in a medical setting. Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), developed by Zindel Segal, Mark Williams and John Teasdale, later showed strong results in helping prevent depressive relapse. Mindfulness is also central to ACT and DBT.
How mindfulness-based therapy works
Guided practices in session: breath, body scan, sensory anchoring, movement
Informal practice: bringing awareness to everyday moments like walking, eating, a hard conversation
Working with difficulty: turning toward uncomfortable experience in small, tolerable doses
Reflection: noticing what you learn and applying it to the patterns you want to change
What mindfulness-based therapy can help with
Stress and burnout
Anxiety and rumination
Recurring depression
Chronic pain and illness
Sleep difficulties
ADHD and attention regulation
Emotional reactivity
