Internal Family Systems (IFS) in Toronto
Internal Family Systems (IFS)
Part of you wants to rest; another part insists there's no time. Part of you wants closeness; another part keeps everyone at arm's length. We talk this way naturally, and Internal Family Systems takes it seriously. Instead of fighting the parts of you that seem to get in the way, IFS helps you understand what they're protecting — and lets them ease up.
We offer IFS in person on Dundas West and online across Ontario.
What is IFS?
IFS is a therapy model that sees the mind as made up of distinct "parts," each with its own feelings, beliefs and job. It also holds that everyone has a core Self — a steady, curious, compassionate presence that can lead the system. Healing happens as your Self builds relationships with your parts, especially the young, hurting ones and the protectors working hard to keep them hidden.
Where it comes from
Therapist Richard Schwartz developed IFS in the 1980s. Working as a family therapist, he noticed clients describing their inner lives much like families — with roles, alliances and conflicts. He applied family systems ideas to the inner world. The research base is still developing but growing, and IFS has become one of the most widely used trauma-informed approaches.
How IFS works
IFS describes three main kinds of parts:
Exiles — younger parts carrying hurt, shame or fear that the protectors try to keep out of awareness
Managers — proactive protectors that keep things under control (the planner, the critic, the people-pleaser)
Firefighters — reactive protectors that act fast to shut down pain (numbing, bingeing, scrolling, rage)
In sessions, you turn toward a part, get curious about it, and learn what it's afraid would happen if it stopped. With protectors' permission, you can reach the exiles they guard and help them release what they've been carrying.

Is IFS therapy right for me?
IFS may suit you if you feel at war with yourself, if you're harsh with yourself in ways you can't seem to stop, or if you're drawn to a gentle, exploratory approach to trauma.
