Gottman Method Couples Therapy in Toronto

Gottman Method Couples Therapy in Toronto

Conflict isn't what ends relationships. Every couple fights. What matters is how you fight, how you repair, and whether there's enough warmth in the everyday moments to carry you through the hard ones. The Gottman Method gives you a clear picture of where your relationship is strong, where it's strained, and practical ways to work on both.

We offer Gottman Method couples therapy in person in Little Portugal and online across Ontario.

What is the Gottman Method?

The Gottman Method is a research-based approach to couples therapy. It combines a detailed assessment of your relationship with targeted interventions to deepen friendship, manage conflict constructively, and build a sense of shared meaning.

Where it comes from

Drs. John and Julie Gottman studied thousands of couples over several decades — including in the research setting that became known as the "Love Lab" — to understand what distinguishes relationships that last from those that don't. Their findings became the Sound Relationship House model, which guides the therapy today.

How the Gottman Method works

Sessions look like conversation, with more pauses. Your therapist might:

Assessment — A joint session, individual sessions with each partner, and detailed questionnaires give a full picture of your relationship's strengths and challenges.

Feedback and plan — We share what we learned and agree on goals together.

Therapy — Sessions focus on the areas that matter most for you. Common threads include:

  • The Four Horsemen — criticism, contempt, defensiveness and stonewalling, and what to do instead

  • Repair — how to de-escalate mid-conflict and recover afterward

  • Flooding — recognizing when your body is too activated to talk productively, and how to take a break that actually helps

  • Friendship and fondness — the small, daily moments of turning toward each other

  • Gridlocked problems — the perpetual differences every couple has, and how to live with them without stalemate

Nothing is forced, and you don't need to be "good at" feeling your body. Many people start out noticing very little. That changes.

How we use the Gottman Method at Noema

We appreciate the Gottman Method's clarity and structure, and we bring our own emphasis on the nervous system into it. "Flooding" is a body state, not a character flaw — it's hard to listen when your heart rate is racing. Learning to notice and settle that state often makes the other skills possible.

Many of our couples therapists integrate Gottman tools with Emotionally Focused Therapy, pairing practical skills with work on the emotional bond underneath.

Is the Gottman Method right for us?

It's a good fit if you like knowing where you stand and want practical tools to work with between sessions. As with any couples therapy, it isn't appropriate where there's ongoing violence or coercive control; if that's a concern, reach out and we'll help you find safer support.
