Existential Therapy in Toronto
Existential Therapy in Toronto
Sometimes nothing is technically wrong. The job is fine, the relationships are fine, and still something feels off. Or a loss, a diagnosis, a milestone birthday has shaken the ground you were standing on, and the old answers don't hold anymore. Existential therapy is a space for the big questions: what matters, who you are, and how to live with the parts of life no one can fix.
We offer existential therapy in person at our Dundas West office and online across Ontario.
What is existential therapy?
Existential therapy is a philosophical, deeply human approach that focuses on the core conditions of being alive: freedom and responsibility, meaning, isolation and connection, and mortality. Rather than treating distress as a symptom to eliminate, it treats it as something worth listening to: often a sign that you're bumping up against a real question about your life.
It's less about techniques and more about honest, searching conversation.
Where it comes from
Existential therapy draws on philosophers such as Kierkegaard, Nietzsche, Heidegger, Sartre and de Beauvoir. Psychiatrist Viktor Frankl, drawing on his experience surviving the Holocaust, developed logotherapy around the search for meaning. Rollo May and Irvin Yalom later brought existential ideas into mainstream psychotherapy. Yalom's framework of four "ultimate concerns" (death, freedom, isolation and meaninglessness) remains widely used.
How attachment-based therapy works
Exploring what matters: getting clear on your values and what gives your life meaning
Facing choice and responsibility: recognizing where you have more freedom than you've allowed yourself, and where you don't
Making room for uncertainty: learning to live with questions that don't have tidy answers
Being with hard realities: loss, change, ageing and mortality, approached directly rather than avoided
Authentic relationship: your therapist engages as a real person, not a detached expert
What attachment-based therapy can help with
Life transitions and turning points
Career questions and feeling off-course
Loss of meaning or direction
Grief
Identity questions
Anxiety about the future, or about death
Living with chronic illness or pain
Feeling disconnected, even when surrounded by people
How we use existential therapy at Noema Therapy
We're drawn to existential work because it refuses easy answers, and so do we. It fits our belief in earned optimism: not pretending life is simpler than it is, but finding what's worth living for anyway. We often pair existential exploration with body-based work. Meaning isn't only an idea; you can feel when you're living in line with what matters, and when you're not.
Existential therapy at Noema is offered by: Karina Waluk, Sarah Gray, Varun Sarangapani, Rachael Fernandes
Is existential therapy right for me?
It may suit you if you're facing a crossroads, if you feel stuck in a life that looks fine on paper, or if you want therapy that makes room for big questions rather than rushing to solve them.
