Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) in Toronto
Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) in Toronto
Most couples in distress aren't fighting about the dishes. They're fighting about whether they matter to each other — whether the other person will show up when it counts. When that question goes unanswered, partners fall into a pattern: one pursues, the other withdraws, and both end up lonelier than before.
Emotionally Focused Therapy helps you step out of that pattern and find each other again. We offer EFT for couples in person on Dundas West and online across Ontario.
What is EFT?
EFT is a structured, evidence-based approach to couples therapy grounded in attachment science. It starts from the view that the need for close, secure connection doesn't end in childhood. Adult partners are each other's safe haven, and much of what looks like conflict is actually distress about that bond feeling threatened.
EFT doesn't focus on teaching communication scripts. It works on the emotions underneath the argument, because that's where the pattern gets its energy.
Where it comes from
Dr. Sue Johnson and Dr. Les Greenberg developed EFT in the 1980s, drawing on John Bowlby's attachment theory and humanistic therapy. It is now one of the most researched approaches to couples therapy, and has been adapted for individuals (EFIT) and families (EFFT).
How EFT works
EFT moves through three stages:
De-escalation — Together we map your negative cycle: the moves each of you makes, what triggers them, and what you're actually feeling underneath. The cycle becomes the problem, not your partner.
Restructuring the bond — With the cycle slowing, partners take new risks: the one who withdraws re-engages; the one who pursues softens and asks for what they need. These moments of reaching and responding are where lasting change happens.
Consolidation — You bring the new pattern to old sore points and build your own ways of repairing when things slip.

EFT at Noema is offered by
Relational work is one of our three clinical pillars, and EFT sits at its centre. We pay close attention to what happens in the body during conflict — the racing heart, the shutting down — because a nervous system in threat mode can't reach for connection. Slowing that down in the room is often where things start to move.
Some therapists combine EFT with Gottman Method tools when a couple wants more structure or skills. We'll tailor it to you.
