Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) in Toronto

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) in Toronto

Your mind is very good at predicting the worst. It tells you the email means you're in trouble, the silence means they're upset, the racing heart means something is wrong. Those predictions feel like facts, and you act accordingly: you avoid, check, over-prepare, withdraw. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy helps you catch those loops and try something different.

We offer CBT in person on Dundas West and online across Ontario.

What is CBT?

CBT is a structured, goal-oriented therapy built on a simple observation: thoughts, feelings, body sensations and behaviours all influence one another. Change one and the others shift. CBT gives you practical ways to notice unhelpful patterns, test them against reality, and build new habits of thinking and acting.

Where it comes from

Psychiatrist Aaron Beck developed cognitive therapy in the 1960s after noticing that his depressed patients had consistent, automatic streams of negative thoughts. Albert Ellis was developing related ideas around the same time. Combined with behavioural therapy, this became CBT, now one of the most widely researched therapies in the world.

How CBT works

Mapping the cycle — linking situations, thoughts, feelings, sensations and actions so the pattern becomes visible

Working with thoughts — noticing common thinking traps (catastrophizing, mind-reading, all-or-nothing) and weighing the evidence

Behavioural experiments — testing a prediction in real life to see what actually happens

Graded exposure — gradually approaching what you've been avoiding, at a pace you choose

Behavioural activation — reintroducing activities that bring pleasure or meaning, especially when mood is low

Between-session practice — short exercises that make the skills your own
