Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT) in Toronto
Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT) in Toronto
You text and then watch the screen. You pull away the moment someone gets close. You feel responsible for everyone's mood in the room. None of these patterns came from nowhere. They're strategies you learned early, often before you had words, for staying close to the people you depended on. Attachment-based therapy helps you understand those strategies and loosen the ones that no longer serve you.
We offer attachment-based therapy in person at our Dundas West office and online across Ontario.
What is compassion-based therapy?
CFT is an evidence-based therapy developed specifically for people struggling with shame and self-criticism. It's based on the understanding that the human brain has evolved several systems for regulating emotion. One system detects threat, one drives us toward goals, and one helps us feel safe and soothed. For many people, the soothing system is underdeveloped. CFT helps you build it.
Compassion here isn't softness or letting yourself off the hook. It's the courage to turn toward suffering, your own and others', and the wisdom to respond in a way that actually helps.
Where it comes from
British clinical psychologist Paul Gilbert developed CFT in the early 2000s. He noticed that many of his clients understood their self-critical thoughts perfectly well, yet still felt no warmth or relief. The logic was there; the feeling wasn't. CFT grew from evolutionary psychology, attachment theory and neuroscience, along with contemplative traditions of compassion practice.
How attachment-based therapy works
Understanding your emotion systems: learning how threat, drive and soothing systems interact, and why self-criticism is often a threat response in disguise closeness, conflict or distance come up
Understanding the inner critic: exploring what your self-criticism is trying to protect you from
Compassionate mind training: practices like soothing rhythm breathing, compassionate imagery and building a compassionate self
Working with shame: approaching painful feelings about yourself with enough safety to let them shift
Bringing it into life: responding to setbacks, mistakes and hard days with support rather than attack
What attachment-based therapy can help with
Harsh self-criticism and perfectionism
Shame
Low self-worth
Depression
Anxiety
Trauma, especially where shame is involved
Burnout driven by never feeling like enough
How we use CFT at Noema Therapy
CFT is, at its core, a nervous-system therapy. It works directly with the body's threat response and helps build the physiology of safety. That's why it fits so naturally with how we practice. Many of our clinicians blend it with ACT, DBT, narrative or relational work, and we pay close attention to what compassion actually feels like in your body. For some people, it can feel unfamiliar or even threatening at first, and that's useful information.
CFT at Noema is offered by: Sarah Gray, Marta Mrozek, Rachael Fernandes, Jessica Green
Is CFT right for me?
It may suit you if you're hard on yourself in ways you can't seem to stop, if shame shows up often, or if you understand your patterns but still can't feel differently about yourself.

FAQs
-
It's one of the most common worries, and the research points the other way. Self-compassion tends to support motivation and resilience, while harsh self-criticism is linked to avoidance and burnout.
-
That's common, and CFT expects it. Resistance to compassion is part of the work, not a sign you're doing it wrong.
-
Related, but broader. CFT is a full therapy model that includes compassion practices alongside psychoeducation and emotional work.
